Holiday Greetings from Home Run Pictures

Every 248 Earth years, when the dwarf planet Pluto's orbit reaches its aphelion [farthest from the Sun], its atmosphere freezes and falls like snow. So at this time, the long-lived Plutonians come out from their warm underground homes to witness the event and celebrate the Aphelion Holiday. Most gather near one edge of the Sputnik Planum just east of the al-Idrisi Montes mountains. Here there are water-ice formations "floating" on the vast nitrogen-ice glacier plains. Some have a similar appearance to decorated trees on the far away planet Earth during their holidays. Young Plutonians, happy to be outside their underground homes scurry around among the formations as their parents admire the panoramic view.

The landscape was created as part of a virtual reality simulation visualizing terrain on Pluto for online streaming site CuriosityStream.
